The Ranch

Luna Mesa Ranch sits on forty acres of high prairie near Avondale, Colorado, on the Southern High Plains. We run a small, registered Dexter cattle herd finished on blue grama and orchard grass, and we keep laying hens. What you see on the price list came off this ground — raised here, worked here, and butchered locally.

The Dexter Herd

Dexters are a small-frame heritage breed out of Ireland — tri-purpose animals bred for beef, milk, and draft work, at a size a family can actually handle. Ours are registered and finished on grass. The meat is fine-grained and deeply flavored, and the herd is calm enough to walk among.

Our Dexter cattle are for sale. Contact me for information.

Pastured Poultry

Right now we have four laying hens on the ground, kept for the family’s eggs. When we run a meat flock, they range across the same forty acres the cattle work, and whole chickens go on the price list until the freezer runs out. Availability comes and goes with the seasons — call ahead if you’re interested.

The Work

A working ranch is quiet most of the time and busy the rest. Calving in the spring, freeze-branding, moving cattle between pens, watching the grass, hauling water, mending fence. The pace is honest: you show up every day, and what needs doing gets done.
